The Ospedale degli Incurabili was founded in 1516 by Lorenza Requenses, a Catalan born in Barcelona in 1463 and the wife of the Neapolitan Giovanni Longo. Lorenza Requenses devoted her life to the incurably ill in gratitude for her own recovery from paralysing rheumatism, which she attributed to divine intervention. She also founded another Neapolitan hospital, the Chiese S.Maria del Popolo. The Ospedale degli Incurabili had a impressive entrance gate called the Torre del Greco, as well as a monumental dispensary full of richly decorated vases and pots dating from the sixteenth century.
