Location: nr. Ponte Cestio, Rome, Papal States
Ospedale San Michele was founded as a hospital for orphans in 1693. From 1700, the impoverished elderly were admitted, and from 1790 it opened separate accommodation for women that had been involved in prostitution. Over time, it gained a reputation as a ghetto for the abnormal. The building still stands and is now in use by a government ministry and as a cultural event venue.
