The Ospedale Sant’ Anna was founded in 1443 by Bishop Giovannin Tavelli da Tossignano as a Franciscan house dedicated to the care of pilgrims, beggars, the infirm, lunatics and illegitimate children. For several centuries the building accommodated prisoners as well as patients, among them the late Renaissance poet Torquato Tasso, who passed seven and a half lonely years - 1579 to 1586 - in its damp conditions. Sant’ Anna is still in existence today as a large general hospital associated with Ferrera University.
