| Guislain wrote about his visit to the Ospedale San Luigi Gonzaga on pages 112-115 of his Lettres Médicales sur l'Italie avec Quelques Renseignements sur la Suisse: Résumé d'un Voyage fait en 1838, Adressé à la Société de Médecine de Gand (F. & E. Gyselynck : Ghent 1840). Guislain called this the most striking hospital in Turin, and possibly the most beautiful asylum in the world. Having well-ventilated wards, the bedsteads are made of iron and the beds are clean. Each one can be screened off from the rest of the ward by way of curtains and there is easy access from the ward to the bathrooms. Guislain considers the environment altogether therapeutic, which was in contrast to patient conditions in Ghent, his hometown, which he regarded as 'almost barbaric’. |

| Hôpital Saint-Louis… c'est l'établissement philanthropique le plus remarquable de Turin… peut-être le mieux approprié, le plus beau du monde actuel. Les lits sont d'une propreté extrême; confectionnés en fer et sur un modèle fort élégant, ils sont pourvus de rideaux… Derrière chaque lit est une porte de communication contre laquelle celui-ci est adossé; ainsi, s'agit-il d'administrer au malade un bain… on ouvre la porte qui est derrière lui, et le lit qui marche sur des roulettes, passe dans la salle attenante où le bain est préparé pour la recevoir… Et c'est dans un pays comme le nôtre, dans le centre que j'habite, qu'une conduite si charitable, si généreuse, si pleine de grandeur, trouverait le plus d'à propos!... C'est dans Gand surtout, que le sort des infirmes et des malades pauvres est digne de la plus profonde pitié… [L'hopital de Gand est] presque barbare. | ||
