Guislain's account of his visit to the Ospedale Pammatone, Genoa (1838) |

| Guislain wrote about his visit to the Ospedale Pammatone on pages 136-137 of his Lettres Médicales sur l'Italie avec Quelques Renseignements sur la Suisse: Résumé d'un Voyage fait en 1838, Adressé à la Société de Médecine de Gand (F. & E. Gyselynck : Ghent 1840). Guislain reported that Pammatone was a huge hospital for the treatment of acute diseases, and one of the most striking buildings in Genoa. He remarked on its graceful staircases, its splendid rooms, and its impressive proportions, and took particular note of the expensive splendour of its chapel, and of Saint Cathérine lying in state. Visitors to the hospital appear to have been a constant source of trouble for patients on the wards, a state of affairs which Guislain laments. He also remarked on the hospitals spartan conditions and said that it was far from well maintained. |

| L'Hôpital Pammatone. C'est un établissement destiné au traitement des maladies aiguës… Sous le rapport de l'architecture, cet hôpital est un des édifices les plus remarquables de Gènes… Son escalier spacieux, ses beaux portiques attirent surtout l'attention des architectes par leurs belles et imposantes proportions… Il y a dans cet hôpital… une coutume qui, dans ses résultats, doit être nuisible aux malades. C'est la faculté qu'on accorde aux familles et aux connaissances, même au public sans distinction, d'avoir entrée tous les jours dans l'hôpital… Dans une chapelle attenant à cet hôpital… on voit le corps de Sainte Cathérine. | ||
