Location: Vienna, Austria
In 1852 a newly built institution was opened in Vienna. Prior to this insane patients were either treated in a department of the general hospital, or in the Narrenturm, a tower-like building notorious for the treatment of its inhabitants.

The large new institution was first superintended by Dr Riedel, formerly of the Prague asylum. The establishment was designed to accommodate 400 curable patients.
